Bellemare's Island
The island is situated far off the coast of northern Scotland, on the very border of the known world. It has become a studying place; a remote laboratory where Count observes some of the worst criminals such as mass murderers, madmen, and arsonists - all who claim to possess magical powers. It is here where he tries to understand what makes man evil with hopes of finding a cure. Although not many people have been to the island or witnessed his methods, his efforts are obviously successful...
When those who are pure and just become wicked and corrupted;
we don't ask any questions.
We burn them at stake.
When the Devil snares a simple man and makes him kill;
we don't ask any questions.
We hang him.
We don't ask any questions and therefore we are losing the greatest war
of them all. The war for our very souls. The war with the Devil.
I say we stopped answering with the fire and rope.
I say we look for the cause.
I say we look for the cure.
I say we start right here, right now.
Count de Bellemare, September 1331
speech given after the first prisoners had arrived at the island
